just in a dream

An outfit shot taken before the big dumping of snow we got in Toronto! Back when I could still go outside in sneakers and not get soggy wet feet (ew). This look has been a staple casual work outfit for the past while. As the temperature drops, my outfits get more repetitive and formulaic. Something about wanting to stay as warm as possible makes me lazy in choosing outfits.

Well, this is my last post for 2012! Another year has flew right by me. It's been a year of change and I think it's just the beginning for me. I am already anticipating a busy 2013, after all, I am moving out of my childhood home and into married life. When, where and how did this happen? It feels like only yesterday when M and I were annoying teenagers at the mall buying similar outfits. Haha, wait. We still go to the mall often and buy similar outfits, we are just slightly less loud and annoying now ;)

Wishing everyone a safe and happy new year! See you all in 2013!!

M picks: new year's outfits

So I'm late on my posts again, what else is new? I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday filled with their favourite people and food! The last few days just flew by. J and I did our traditional Boxing Day shopping and were out for 13 hours - we don't mess around! Although to be honest neither of us go crazy, more than anything we go to burn off Christmas dinner from the night before.

Working through the holidays, minus Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day, has taken away that holiday feeling for me. I don't think I'll process that this year is coming to an end until a couple weeks into the new one!

Speaking of New Year's, I polyvore-d a couple outfits that I would wear. These exact specific items might not exist in my closet but the looks are essentially what I would go for.

Any surprise that I put together an outfit with shorts first? Gold sparkly shorts make a good statement piece for events like NYE. To let them shine and grab attention, I would do neutral colours for the rest of the outfit.

NYE is also a prime opportunity to dress like a disco ball (haha). Metallic silver pants and accessories really allow your outfit to shine and stand out.

Or you could go the sequin route which is completely acceptable on NYE.

For the most part I tend to lean towards the casual even for more special events. When everyone else is decked out to the nines, sleek and simple can often stand out more.

Likely I'm going to be in PJs at home watching Departures marathon (best travel show ever!) and snacking on frozen grapes. I know, it's so hard to believe just HOW exciting my life is! :)
Whatever your plan are, have a fun and safe 31st!!

J wants: boxing day 2012

Most people have some kind of holiday tradition every year around this time. You could call Boxing Day a tradition of M and I. This year, I have my usual "to buy/look for" list and added a "to avoid" list. The "to avoid" list is crucial to helping me cut back and cut down on my wardrobe as next year I will be moving to a new place which means sharing closet space with my fiance.

buy

I'll all about looking for deals on well-made basics this Boxing Day. More specifically I am looking for the perfect slouchy tee in grey or white and a boyfriend style button down in white. I have my eye on some from Aritzia but I will drop by Holts and The Bay to see if I can score something from Alexander Wang or Pink Tartan on sale.

I also need to stock up on basic black socks and cotton undies. Aerie makes some great ones in super fun patterns and they alway have a great sale every year.

So everything in my picture above is clothes, except for the soap and you may be wondering why I put that on there, but the holiday scents from Bath & Body Works get deeply discounted during boxing Week. I intend to stock up!

[Tee & button down: Aritzia | socks: GAP | underwear: Aerie | soap: Bath & Body Works]

avoid

I'm pretty sure everybody has certain clothing items they keep getting drawn to in the store time and time again. The following are on my "to avoid" list...

Polka dot ANYTHING. Seriously, it's become my new neutral. I need to stop. (This is going to take a lot of willpower! M will have to help me out haha!)

Chunky cable knit sweaters. Especially in creams and whites. In fact, regular knit white/cream sweaters also need to be avoided.

Chambray button downs. I already own four of them. And yes, one of them has polka dots on them.

Black flat boots. Enough said.

give me all, give me all, give me all your attention baby

[abstract print dress: H&M | black cardigan and heather grey tights: Joe Fresh | black flats: Gap]

Happy 12/21/2012 aka the day the world comes to an end, well maybe not since you are alive and reading this. Today's post is a work outfit from this past Wednesday. Winter-y weather is great for my closet because of the follow formula.

Me + Winter = hibernation mode
hibernation mode boredom  → DIY projects → new accessories

I'm a bit of a jack of all trades (and definitely a master of none) when it comes to interests. I dabble in a little of everything, sports, crafts, arts, etc. I'm actually curious about I come across to you readers who don't know me in person or don't know me very well! Perhaps a little all over the place?

[ DIY "raw crystal" necklace: tutorial via youtube]

What better pairing for a printed dress then an understated statement necklace? (yes that is an oxymoron!) I stayed up far too late on Tuesday night (2am? 3am?) making this because I decided at some point after midnight that it was the "perfect time" to finally start this DIY project. Have I mentioned that all this week I've been going for daily jogs at 6:30am to work towards my new marathon running aspirations? Apparently I just don't like sleep.

the most wonderful time of the year

PC150929

Soooo....THIS happened this weekend. Some friends of mine threw an ugly Christmas sweater/house warming party and of course I was more than happy to hunt down sweaters to partake in this. Bee and I found our sweaters from a random thrift store we happened to drive by a couple of weekends ago. They had them all pre-separated on a rack at this place! At $5.99 each, there was quite a selection. I originally wanted one with Christmas cats on it, but only ended up only finding a dog one so I settled for this crazy embellished Christmas tree one instead. Needless to say, my friends found the sweater as ugly as I did and I ended up winning the vote of having the ugliest sweater at the party. My prize? Fruitcake, haha!

PC180933

My sweater in all it's glory!! It has bows! And beads! And glitter thread! Although, tossing this sweater into the washing machine may have caused it to lose some decorative parts...

Of course my outfit wasn't complete without some extra shine, so sequined leggings were definitely appropriate.

never get to clean up the mess i made

[studded black blouse: Cynthia Rowley | denim shorts and white knee high socks: Gap | black ridding boots: Aerosoles]

How is it that we’re only a week away from Christmas already? For those of you who celebrate Christmas, have you finished all of your shopping? There are still a few names left to cross off on my list, which hopefully will be different by the end of day tomorrow. FYI – Tuesdays are typically the slowest day in the retail industry (although the holiday season might negate some of that trend).

This was a cozy outfit I wore over the past weekend. Shorts might not scream winter clothing to most people but layered over wool tights and paired with thick knee high socks, they are just as warm as pants (if not warmer). These denim shorts used to be a pair of old jeans that I cut off for a Halloween costume one year.

On an unrelated note, I started my new years resolution early and finally started hitting the treadmills in my condo gym on Saturday. A few years ago I used to jog for 30-50 minutes daily and am going to try and get back into it. Randomly I decided last month after a 15km walk that I wanted to attempt a half-marathon in the 2013. Endurance isn't much of a concern but training is definitely necessary if I don't intend on getting completely owned by every other racer! (As an added bonus my pants and other slim-fit clothing would really appreciate me getting back down to my regular size.)Wish me luck!

our hopes and expectations

IMG_1097
[white sweater: American Eagle | mint silk skirt: Anthropologie | gold heeled booties: Topshop]'

Living in maxi skirts again. I really enjoy pairing a chunky knit with this flowy silk skirt, it's a great way to winterize it. A pair of fleece-lined tights help too, for added warmth. The only downside is the killer amount of static electricity the skirt and the tights generate together. I've been trying to figure out a way of getting rid of the static without using static guard cling spray (I don't like the smell). I read online somewhere that pinning a safety pin to the inside of the skirt will resolve this problem. I haven't tried it out yet, but I'll share my results with everyone when I do.

Polish-free nails! It's so weird to me seeing them bare, but sometimes they need a break to keep them healthy!

Well, I'm off to get ready for yet another holiday party now! Tis the season and all...

who was the last to know you

[red v-neck sweater: Old Navy | indigo blue blouse: Joe Fresh  | grey shorts: Forever 21 | black pumps: Zara | gold necklace: H&M | lipstick: Wet n' Wild - Cherry Picking]

[nails: China Glaze - It's a Trap-eze]

Last Friday my immune system finally succumbed to whatever it was that made everyone sick the past few weeks. I spent several days curled up in a ball drifting in and out of sleep and waiting for death! It's hard to believe these shots were taken just a few days prior.

For casual holiday dinners I just throw on sweaters of a festively appropriate colour over neutral bottoms. I'm lacking in the variety department lately because I haven't bothered wearing the clothes that I had boxed up, despite the fact that everything is now unpacked. Then again, who am I kidding? Looking back through our archives, I've never really been about variety and always wear the same looks over and over until I stumble onto a new one I like. Sweaters, collars, and shorts FTW!

Being the nail polish hoarder that I am, of course I picked up "It's a Trap-eze" from their Cirque du Soleil collection. The formula is very opaque, and took only two coats to even out. It reminds me of ice cream sprinkles, which greatly appeals to the kid in me!

I didn't get a chance to adjust the settings on my camera for a better photo, but this is what happens when you're a rush to get out the door! Also, my mom has trouble using my camera haha. This is what I wore to my work holiday party on the weekend. Originally I was thinking like M and going to wear a LBD, but I saw this Versace for H&M dress looking lonely in my closet, so I decided it needed some love. I kept my accessories really simple with a big jewelled cuff and stud earrings because I wanted my dress to be the focal point of my outfit.

i tried to go on like i never knew you

[black bow dress: H&M | floral lace tights: Zara | black bow heels: Ann | black belt with gold lock-and-key closure: Forever 21 | arm party: Joe Fresh, Forever 21, H&M]

There is a reason that a classic is a classic. LBDs or little black dresses are definitely staples any girl's closet as holiday party season starts. This is what I wore to my work holiday party last weekend.

Since I've been on a closet diet from moving around over the last 2 months my clothing purchases have significantly decreased. Luckily I didn't have to go shopping for this year's party, since this dress was already in the back of my closet. I've already post it here earlier in the year. Shift dresses are great because you can completely change the silhouette and shape by throwing on a belt. I also stacked on a bunch of gold-toned bracelets for a bit of holiday sparkle.

Honestly, the majority of the time accessories make the outfit more than the clothing. A few bracelets and a different pair of shoes and you can take a casual black dress to a holiday party. If you are a girl and you don't have a simple little black dress, get on it! It has to be one of the most versatile articles of clothing out there.

I'll send you my love on a wire

Excuse my tired face...Everything has been super busy as of the late. M and I finally met up this week and as you can tell from my pictures we are back to shooting at some of our staple indoor locations!

It's definitely colder this year than last. I looked back at the blog archives and realized that during this time last December M and I still managed to shoot photos outside without coats. You probably couldn't get me to take off my coat outside now. Brr!

IMG_0837

I picked up this shoulder spiked blazer recently at Forever 21. It reminded me a lot of a Zara one I really liked, but couldn't justify spending $100+ on. At less than half the price of the Zara one I scooped it up because I know that this spike/grommet trend won't last forever and probably not worth spending too much money on.

there's nothing like you and i

[yellow striped sweater: Old Navy | studded collar blouse: Forever 21 | black pants: H&M | black boots: Aerosoles | lipstick: Revlon - Black Cherry]

So my obsession with over-sized baggy men's sweaters has now evolved into sweater-collared shirt combo phase. The last half of this year, I've been all about menswear or menswear inspired looks. At the moment I am seeking a giant grandpa sweater or cardigan haha. They are super comfortable and cozy! They say wisdom comes with age, which is apparent because grandpas know where it's at. (No gilf syndrome here, just an appreciation of their classic style!)

Every other person I know seems to have the flu at the moment. It wiped out pretty much everyone on my floor at work. Hope that those of you who are under the weather get better soon!

J wants: christmas 2012 edition

xmas12

I can't believe it's the first week of December already! Despite spending the day shopping today with my mom, only a small portion of my Christmas list has been completed. I am so behind this year! Are you an early gift buyer or a late one?

Keeping with last year's tradition, here is my wish list for this Christmas (aka. some of the things l will probably end up buying for myself eventually hehe).

- Nail polish, $8.00, Essie
So I'm not a huge fan of red polish, but this one looks so nice ("Leading Lady")! Darker toned and microglitter...Definitely very festive.

- Ceramic stacking bowls, $16.45, Starbucks
If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you've probably figured out that I love collecting Starbucks mugs. So I know this isn't a mug but ceramic bowls disguised as a mug? Love it.

- Pleated maxi skirt, $79.50, LOFT
I saw this skirt at the newly opened up LOFT store at Yorkdale and loved the colour and weight of it. It's pretty much the perfect fall/winter maxi skirt.

- Comme des Garçons Play x Converse sneakers, $100, Barneys
Something casual to put into my shoe rotation!

- Paris Versus New York: The Complete Series, $24.42, Indigo
I've actually been following the Paris vs New York blog for quite some time and love the illustartions.

Rockie and Emilie (small), $725 & $925, Alexander Wang
I'm on the hunt for a new purse. It's so hard deciding between the Rockie in Oyster or the Emilie tote (small) in black. Decisions, decisions.

What's on your wish list this year?
