it's not the right thing baby, but the right thing suits so few

[hounds-tooth dress, yellow chain waist belt, and purple tights : H&M | faux leather jacket: Sparkle & Fade | flats: Pure | polish: Sally Hansen - Blue me Away]

This was something I wore to work last week. My dress was last seen here, with a red scarf and black tights, in a more classic look. I personally prefer it better this time around, the accents of bright colours and faux leather jacket make it more urban.

How I feel inside definitely affects how I dress. During the last few weeks my disarrayed outfits matched my overstressed and worn out state-of-mind. It's good to actually get dressed in the morning without feeling a sense of dread for the day. I can barely remember the last time I didn’t feel in control of my own life, but sometimes things just hit too close to home. So it can be hard to remember that life is a series of choices, if you don’t like something, there is generally the option to pick something different. Obstacles in life can be like a dress, what you pick to pair match with it can change it completely.

I'm happy to be feeling more like myself and to get excited for the things I enjoy again.
Hope you are looking forward to more posts featuring colourful combos!

A few close ups of the belt because the details are so unique. When I saw it hanging on the rack, it took a few moments before my mind processed how to wear it. Yellow is quickly becoming my favourite colour for accessories.

Do you try to wear the same articles of clothing in different ways each time? Or do you prefer to stick to tried and true combinations?

i want to stand up, i want to let go

[hat: Talula (Aritzia) | neon jewel necklace: H&M | black and white patterned romper: Forever 21 | gladiator sandals: H&M | bag: Zara | Fruit Ninja apple: won from Whack a Mole]

Nothing says the end of summer like the CNE. I've been going every summer since...I don't know when. I love it! The gross, but delicious food, the carnival games, the overall kitschiness of it.

It's been a pretty hot summer and this is the first time I've worn this romper all season (ironically, when it's almost over). In truth, I forgot all about it. I found it buried under other clothes in my dresser last week when I was looking for something else. It's always fun rediscovering something you've forgotten about in your wardrobe!

A few snapshots from my day at the CNE. Note the photo on the bottom left. That's a beer battered deep fried bacon wrapped hotdog sprinkled with bacon bits. It was delicious. I love gross food like this haha.

until finally my time decends on me

[dot pattern blouse and glasses necklace: Forever 21 | cardigan: Joe Fresh | black shorts: H&M | thigh-high socks: Ardene | black flats: Pure | lips: Revlon Balm Stain - Romantic | polish: Maybelline - Pink Shock]

Something I wore last weekend, which I spent the majority of inside working. My work laptop was coming home with me almost daily for 2-3 weeks. Apparently, being cooped up inside causes me to dress like a school girl librarian...haha! Already mentioned needing an intervention in the future about my clothing in this post. I write about wearing contrasting elements often, in this case, it's work on top and fun on the bottom (which is a fitting analogy of life recently).

A few things have been set in motion, so I'm slowly feeling some weight being lifted from my shoulders. Yesterday I was out for 15 hours, at least 10 of which I was on my feet. The reason for all that walking was Fan Expo and TUM. My inner nerd, artist, and stomach were all very satisfied. I saw tons of cosplayers at Fan Expo, but my favourite, and the only one I asked for a photo of, was a guy dressed as Russell from Pixar's Up. Both events gave me a much needed dosage of excitement.

I'll end this post with a picture of me hanging out with Lego Hulk at Fan Expo just to give you more of a sense of who I am in real life, a big silly nerd.

To quote my friend Mark, "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry... actually you might, since it's just me smiling!"

I was actually trying to make a growling face...and somehow just looked like I'm smiling. This is exactly why when I try to give people dirty looks on the subway, we just end up making awkward eye contact...haha.

What weekend fun did you get into?

baby, i got a plan

[white asymmetrical dress: A Moveable Feast (Aritzia) | belt: Forever 21 | clear plastic cuff: H&M | purse: See by Chloe | sandals: ALDO]

I finally got around to cutting and re-perming my hair! I am super lazy when it comes to my hair. I don't get it trimmed frequently as I should, in fact I probably only get my hair cut twice a year. I've been perming my hair annually for the last couple of years and recently switched over to digital perms, which is definitely the way to go. With digital, my hair seems healthier and less dry after (as compared to regular perms), the wave is more natural looking and the results last a lot longer. My hair in this post is what a digital perm looks like after a year, still has some wave to it!

but everything looks better when the sun goes down

[mint blouse, navy pants, silver skinny belt, yellow neon ombre scarf, silver bracelets: H&M | faux leather jacket: Silence and Noise | heels: Franco Sarto | polish: Maybelline - Pink Shock]

Summer is already starting to cool down. The weather this week was cool enough to start wearing jackets again. I'm sad to see it go so quickly, especially since I've been too busy to enjoy much of it this year. At least chilly weather does mean more variety for the blog. I wore this yesterday because there is something inexplicably awesome about faux leather jackets, neon accents, and heels together.

I really can't believe that September is just around the corner and this blog will be a year old. Time seemed to have flown by...(aside for the last few weeks). Summer always gives me a sense of nostalgia and currently I'm missing several things and several people.

How are you going to be enjoying the last weeks of summer?

a day at the beach

[hat: Talula (Aritzia) | striped top: Simons | patterned coral shorts: The GAP | flip flops: Old Navy]

There is definitely a distinct fall breeze drifting in the air over these past few weeks...So what better way to spend one of the few remaining weekends of summer than at the beach?

The weather was lovely, a cool breeze balanced by warm sun and not a cloud in sight! The weather plus good company, delicious food and a little-known beach in the city equals a perfect Saturday afternoon.

I kept my outfit simple and unfussy. A 3/4 length sleeved tee helped keep me warm in the shade and protected my shoulders from getting sunburnt. My hair is now long enough to be side-braided. I think it's time for a haircut. I could use some change in my life right about now.

i'll shut up and carry on, the scream becomes a yawn

[white bow blouse and silver skinny belt: H&M | mint cardigan: Forever 21 | periwinkle skirt: Club Monaco | black flats: Pure]

I really haven't been feeling like myself lately, between being sick on and off for 2 weeks and overstressed from work and selling/buying a home, I've been really withdrawn. The I-have-to-does have suffocated the I-want-to-does, to the point that I haven't even been enjoying things I normally love. Yes life, I have been failing at you.

There are actually lots of individuals I owe apologies to, I've been neglecting my relationships and coming off unresponsive over the last few weeks. Overwhelmed barely begins to my current state. I write this not to complain, but because today I decided it was time to start snapping out of it. I started by treating myself to a 30ml bottle of Jo Malone's Orange Blossom at Holt Renfrew. How fresh and uplifting it smelled, justified the $80 price tag. Will get some semblance of my life back together soon!

Also been trying to get back into getting shots of my outfits and attempting to look more put together. I looked pretty worn out over the past 2 days since I was in the office for up to 12 hours at a time and taking my laptop home. Luckily I got a change to get this shot in earlier in the week. If you follow the blog, it should be self-explanatory. Mint is love! Also still sticking to loose silhouettes as flowy fabrics are a girl's best friend when dressing to conceal the extra lbs from stress-eating and lack of physical activity. My next order of business in treating myself better is to start giving my health a bit more priority!

Have you spoiled yourself to anything lately?

P.S. Sorry for not up-keeping my blog posts or our meetings J! As soon as I get my project pushed out we need to meet and catch up. IMU! <3

and i know i've said it a million times

[white hat: The Bay | white lace dress: Forever 21 | gold beaded sandals: Tahari | bag: Gucci]

Does this dress seem familiar? Well yes, it is the sister version of the one M is wearing in this post! My version is from Forever 21 and doesn't have an exposed zipper at the back (or long sleeves) like M's version from Zara. It's interesting how fast fashion retailers often come out with similar styles, but during different seasons. I've definitely seen things show up one season at H&M, then the next year at Forever 21 and vice versa.

M loves: wendy's lookbook

I don't have any excuses at the moment. I literally have no content to post about today.
At the moment I don't just have writers block, I have 0% motivation to even put any effort into getting dressed in the morning (which maybe doesn't say much because my normal effort is pretty minimal anyways). On the rare one or two days during the week that I'm wearing something I could write about, I haven't been able to get a photo taken of it.

That leads us to this post about not having a post for you. Since I have nothing to show you of my own, I thought I would share a video by one of my favourite fashion youtubers, wendyslookbook. The quality of the videos her and "mystery man" (her videographer) produce are amazing and I'm always happen to see them pop-up in my subscription box. I started following her at the beginning of last year when she first started making videos.

These are her fall trends from last year but honestly she has such timeless style that I don't think any of these outfits are outdated.

I'll try to get my act together before my next post...

nyc: part 3

[hat: Talula (Aritzia) | cobalt blue top: Just Female (Winners) | denim shorts: American Eagle | grey purse: Michael Kors | gladiator sandals: H&M]

This post marks the last of my New York outfits and snapshots. We weren't there for that long, just about three days and three nights. Like many others, I love this city. I know I will be back again really soon!

In outfit related news, I'm sure you are all tired of me wearing those same H&M sandals all the time, I'm sorry! They are just so worn-in and comfy. My other pair of "walking" sandals are currently in need of repair and I just haven't gotten around to them yet.

A very fresh sushi lunch. The meals didn't come with soup or salad. I think Toronto has spoiled me.

A little amusement park inside Central Park!

Sunset in Greenwich Village.

Takeout from the Meatball Shop. So good! Yes, we were totally eating in some random little park nearby. It was a 45 minute wait for a table at the restaurant and I was too hungry!

A friendly face outside of the Marc Jacobs store. Hehe.

(Taken on the day after) Going home.

nyc: part 2

[hat: Talula (Aritzia) | grey tank: Urban Outfitters | semi-sheer side slit maxi skirt: Mikkat Market |  gladiator sandals: H&M | grey purse: Michael Kors]

Another day in NYC, another maxi skirt. I tried my best to pack light for this trip with versatile clothing that would keep me cool or warm, no matter the weather! I've got one more outfit to show after this one from my trip, it will be up in my next post. No more maxi skirts though, I promise.

More snapshots of my trip (L-R):

The hotel we stayed at was super close to Grand Central Terminal, which had a Magnolia Bakery in their food court. Special Grand Central cupcake for breakfast? Yes please!

Surprisingly enough to most people, I actually didn't buy much on this trip. In fact, Bee came home with more stuff than me! Here I am goofing around in Century 21. Bee managed to snag a YSL tie here for $30.

The weather got super gloomy when we got onto the Staten Island ferry. Then it rained. Then the sun came out lol.

Mmmm, super creamy cheesecake from Junior's in Brooklyn.

Paid a visit to the giant Forever 21 in Times Square. It has 4 levels!

Looking over at Manhattan from Brooklyn at dusk.

you're the only road i know

[contrast collar blouse and chain necklace: Forever 21 | black pants and silver cuff bracelet: H&M | white flats: Joe Fresh | polish: Revlon - Make Mine Mango]

My affinity for colour sometimes gets put aside for classic white and black combinations. Since I enjoy dichotomies so much, I mixed gold and silver together as well for today's outfit. This weekend I've been battling the flu I had earlier this week and hiding mostly indoors. If it wasn't for the Olympics, I would be going crazy with cabin fever.

Hoping you Canadians who have this civic holiday long weekend off are enjoying it!

nyc: part 1

[hat: Talula (Aritzia) | grey cotton maxi dress: ASOS | white belt, leopard print scarf & black gladiator sandals: H&M | purse: Michael Kors]

We arrived in New York just after the lunch hour and pretty much took to the streets after checking in at our hotel. Even though the plane ride was short I still opted for a comfy outfit. To keep warm on the flight I actually had my chambray button down on over my dress and a lightweight scarf around my neck. Similar to Toronto, New York is also very humid so I quickly ditched the shirt and scarf when I got into the city. On a side note, I'm holding a strawberry frozen lemonade from McDonald's in this picture, we need that up here!

The first day at a glance (L-R):

70 Park Avenue Hotel, our home for the next few days. It was so convenient staying in midtown Manhattan, despite the ongoing noise at night haha.

Chicken on rice from a food cart at 53rd and 6th. So tasty. I could definitely go for some of that right now.

Bought something from Uniqlo. How cute is this 10th anniversary Hello Kitty Uniqlo shopping bag?!

Spotted something very Canadian ;)

Sul lang tang from Gahm Mi Oak, recommended by a friend. Really good! But damn, Korean food is so expensive in NYC. This place had $18.95 bimbimbap!

Takashi Murakami at the MoMA.

we auctioned off our memories

[mint polka dot peter pan blouse and grey cuffed shorts: Forever 21 | denim flats: Old Navy | coral skinny belt: Joe Fresh | polish: Sally Hansen - Mellow Yellow]

I wore this a few days ago when I spent a casual day downtown. Finally all my mint purchases this year have appeared on the blog. The mint ban is still going strong, so far I've been good and resisted the temptation of any new editions to my collection.

Can you guess why this shirt called my name? Peter pan collars, pleating, polka dots, and exposed gold zipper in the back. When I threw on the blouse and shorts, it needed a little something extra, so a bright coral belt came to the rescue. I like using bright bold accessories as a contrast, to bring out a soft muted colour palettes better. (Think of it like sprinkling salt on watermelon to bring out the sweetness.) The belt adds more visual interest and helps keep neutral outfits from blending into the background too much.

How do you like your neutral outfits? Simple and muted? or with pops of colour?

Hard to tell from the photos but I've been really getting some colour this summer due to my inability to commit to putting on sunscreen. This time last week I was spending the day taking photos of Evergreen's Green City Adventure Camp. It was a lot of fun running after the kids in the woods and jumping on rocks to cross streams. Going back to the office at the end of the day was such a hard adjustment. I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that I don't really love what I do any more.
